Celebrating it 110th
anniversary, Metuchen Savings Bank
was
chartered as Metuchen Building and Loan
Association on September 6, 1897 by
leading citizens of the day. It was
founded to provide for the safe
investment of members savings and give
mortgage loans on parcels of land known
as the Woodwild tract in the Village of
Metuchen.
The name was changed to
Metuchen Savings and Loan Association in
1960 after receiving approval for
insurance of accounts. In response to
the business community’s request for
additional services, the Bank converted
to a state chartered savings bank in
1993, changing its name to Metuchen
Savings Bank.
During its 110 year
history, the Bank has survived many
wars, including two world wars, market
crashes, the Great Depression and
numerous economic cycles and recessions.
It has continued to grow and prosper
through conservative management,
expansion of services and customer
loyalty.
Since our Centennial
Celebration in 1997, the Bank has grown
from $128 mil in assets to over $275 mil
in 2007. After the purchase and
renovation of 442 Main Street, the
retail operation was relocated there in
2003, adding safe deposit boxes and
additional drive-up lanes to our many
services. Online and reverse mortgages
products were offered in the past year.
Business products have also been
expanded and we expect to start offering
Remote Deposit before year end.
While other banks have
chosen to branch or merge, Metuchen
Savings Bank has made a conscious
decision to remain an independent
community bank, with emphasis on serving
the financial needs of individuals and
businesses in the area with quality
products and delivery of service by
professional and courteous staff
members.
The Bank has had a long
history of community involvement,
starting with the
Metuchen-Edison-Woodbridge YMCA, whose
association can be traced back to its
beginnings, as Charles S. Edgar was one
of our original founders. Active
membership in the Metuchen Area Chamber
of Commerce, as well as the Edison and
Woodbridge Chambers, has been an
integral part of our business. The
popular Metuchen Country Fair started in
1964, was founded by our Chairman, Marty
Jessen, with Bank Officers and Staff
serving on the committee.
Directors, Officers and
Staff have been active with many local
groups and organizations including the
“Y”, the Chambers of Commerce mentioned
above, the Metuchen-Edison Historical
Society, the Rotary Club of Metuchen,
JFK Medical Center and the Edison
Memorial Tower Corporation, to name a
few.
Metuchen Savings Bank has
been very supportive of the many youth,
senior, volunteer and non-profit groups
in the area including, Women Helping
Women as well as major projects
including “Freedom Plaza”, JFK Medical
Center, the recently opened Wellness
Center at Metuchen High School and the
campaign to restore the Edison Tower.
We are proud of our long
history of stability and service to the
community and surrounding area and
remain committed to the future. |
